BREWER – CES, Inc., a Maine-headquartered firm of engineers, environmental scientists, and land surveyors, is pleased to announce the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine recently recognized CES with an Engineering Excellence Award for its work for Brookfield’s Penstock Number One Replacement Project.

Built in the early 1900s, each Penstock runs below the existing grade from the lake to the Powerhouse, with the last 125 feet of the Penstocks running directly beneath said Powerhouse.

“With all of our projects, CES’ professionals strive to deliver results that exceed the expectations of our clients,” said CES President and CEO Denis St. Peter, PE. “We are proud to receive an ACEC of Maine Engineering Excellence Award for this project in particular because it has allowed us to highlight the ingenuity of our team in the area of using historical plans to design and retrofit a portion of the Penstock project built for another phase.  This is truly what we mean when we promote our ability to provide sensible solutions on a case by case basis.”

The original project envisioned by Brookfield was to replace a section of Penstock No. 3. That project moved forward and a local company, Millinocket Fabrication & Machine LLC, fabricated the replacement Penstock sections.

Upon further evaluation of the entire system, the focus of the project changed to renovating/ replacing a section of Penstock No. 1.  Brookfield turned to the Design-Build Team of Sargent Corporation and CES to design and construct a replacement system utilizing the previously fabricated sections.

CES developed a design that used all of the originally fabricated sections with minimal waste and limited additional fabrication.  CES’ design required correlating the original Penstock drawings dating to the early 1900’s, when the system was constructed, to current site information to ensure proper fit and alignment between the section designated for replacement and remaining Penstock to remain.

“Working with Sargent Corporation, our approach saved Brookfield considerable expense and allowed the project to be completed within the construction window specified,” said Senior Project Manager and Vice President Pete Tuell, PE. “During the project process, our team had to continuously find innovative ways to maintain the schedule, focus on worker safety, and create a lasting solution for the nearly century old power system.”

The result of these efforts not only saved money, but also allowed the project to be turned over to Brookfield three days ahead of schedule.  The success of this phase prompted Brookfield to move forward with the replacement of Penstock No. 3 and that phase is now under construction and slated for completion later this year.
